The Annex was named when the area north of Bloor Street between Avenue Road and Bathurst Street up to Dupont was annexed to the city of Toronto around the beginning of the 20th century. Because most of it was laid out for development at that time, before the automobile, the lots were fairly narrow creating a population density sufficient to support a vibrant commercial centre along Bloor Street. And it’s still that way making it one of the easiest places to live without a car as most everything is within walking distance. There’s a number of casual places to have a drink, maybe some food such as Kilgour’s, Madison Avenue and Pauper’s pubs, Future Bakery, The Pump and The Brunswick House Tavern at the top of my street amongst others.

For live music and a game of pool you can’t beat the The James Joyce Irish Pub. For bands from all over Lee’s Palace is booked by House of Blues. There are some great ethnic restaurants here as well; Thai Basil, Sushi on Bloor, Mt Everest (Nepaleese/Indian), Country Style (Hungarian), Ghazal (late night middle eastern takeout), Ginger (Vietnamese) and lots of others. Harbord Street one block south has been described in a local arts magazine as the best strip of restaurants this side of Manhattan. Splendido has everything including gourmet wine and food tastings in their wine cellar room. 93 Harbord has fine Tunisian style cuisine.

Harbord Room is open till 2 and has an industry following. Messis sits where Poretta’s once reigned over the street, and new arrival Terre (Italian) rounds things out along with Harbord House, Momo (middle eastern) and Boulevard Cafe (Peruvian).
